Default A good Brother is nice to have

Well friends, this little post is to thank my younger brother. He helped me out of a serious problem with my old boat trailer. A couple years ago I inadvertently broke my trailer after dropping off the end of a ramp during winter pool. I was able to get the boat and now broken trailer home. I had acquired an old boat trailer that I converted to fit my boat, but it had some wheel bearing issues that I tried to alleviate. Well, this worked for about two years with a little TLC and not driving far or fast. Then came the do or die moment. (do it one more time and you may die). I was going to put new tires and wheels on the trailer and found once again the wheel bearings to be almost non-existent on one side. Following the advice of my safety engineer (wife demanded) I parked said crippled boat and trailer until proper repairs could be made. Not being familiar enough with the How To's of what to get and install I gave my younger brother (At 6'4" and 230 lbs, I don't say little brother) a call. Now this here little fellow is the mechanic of the family and can fix just about anything, and has plenty of said needed experience in the situation I was now in. I had researched what I thought was need but knew I did not have the required skills needed to perform the needed and proper surgery on the wheel assembly. A visit and consultation was scheduled, and after a diagnosis was rendered. We promptly set about to replace the spindles. During the surgery it was determined that new hubs were also needed so that was also done. So now the trailer has a new life with new legs, hips and knees to carry on for a few more years. . So, I give thanks to the good Lord and SAVIOR for giving me the blessing of not being a victim of my own foolishness and to have a brother that has the skills and willingness to help his older brother out. Keep in mind he lives about 2- 1/2 hours away. We had a blast getting together and working on said project together. I really cannot say enough to express my gratitude and love for my brother so I felt it would be great to share the story here with my friends and CDC family.

Remember folks, Check the wheel bearings and tires on a regular basis. Your safety and others depends on it.

Agreed Dan, it’s my pre fishing trip ritual. Last year I replaced all my bearings as well. AAA won’t touch any trailers….

Yes, indeed. I recommend using a floor jack, lift one side off the ground, grab the wheels and pull side to side, and top to bottom. Then give each wheel a good spin as you listen and feel. Do both sides. That's how I found a broke wheel bearing roller, a piece was just tumbling around in there. No other way would I have found it besides a break down. Plenty of good grease. No other sign what so ever. I check 'em once a year like that now, takes very little time.
