Default Hard to cold start 60 HP Mercury, EFI 4 stroke

In the mornings, or after sitting some time, I find it difficult to start the motor. Turns over, sounds like it going to catch, then nothing. Finally it starts after repeated attempts. After running for some time, I can stop and fish, then start again no problem. Seems fine if the motor is warm.

60 HP Mercury, EFI 4 stoke. Primer bulb compressed until tight before starting. Non ethanol fuel used. Thanks.

Sounds like a leak in teh fuel system. Not leaking fuel, put allowing air in teh line. Check the fuel lines from tank connections to filter.

I have the same motor. That is certainly not how mine acts. I am thinking the same as Hanr3

Choke not working? That will make it hard to start when cold.

Since it's an EFI engine, It shouldn't have a choke as there's no carbs. The ECM uses the data from the temp sensor to know to enrich the mixture when cold. I'd suspect the temp sensor has failed and is telling the ECM it's warm (even though it's not) and therefore no cold enrichment and runs well when warm. A scan tool will confirm my hunch, but most of us do not have one. A visit to a mechanic with a scan tool is probably warranted.
Please let us know what you find.

Excellent explanation Chris, thank you. Didn't think it was a choke issue since no carbs on engine. Thanks for your post.

Just MORE electronic, words that C.C doesn't allow, to cause hard to find problems.

How does it run when it finally starts? Does it seem to rev low until it has a chance to start warming up? I'd agree its a temp sensor. If you can find it you can probably unhook it from the wiring harness and check resistance or continuity on it. I'm not sure if it would be resistance based for a a dynamic signal or if its simply an on/off function creating/breaking continuity as the temp rises. Pretty popular motor so I'd bet if you found the part number online and googled how to test it there would be a number of helpful results.

Just a suggestion. Turn key on and count to 10 then crank it and see if it does any better. Buddy’s Yamaha fuel injected will not start if you turn key from off to cranking real quick. Turn key on count to ten crank and it fires every time. Give fuel pump time to prime system.
