    Default Mercury Optimax


    Good morning all. I have a 2006 Mercury optimax 150hp. I’m am wanting to know the best plugs to use for the motor. Is NGK acceptable?

    Thats what I ran in mine. Seems like they were 15 bucks each 15 years ago. I believe thats what come in the Mercurys anyways. NGK Laser Iridium

    Yes, NGK is the way to go. I have a 135 Opti and I thought ours would be the same. Turns out, the 150 Opti is the only one that's different. See the P/N's at this site.

    Just a note be careful where you buy them believe it or not there are a lot of fake NGK plugs being made. There was a great discusion on BBC about the fakes and some of the issues they can cause. Buy from a reputable source not E-Bay.

    I always bought mine at Advance Auto. A lot cheaper than a marina or boat store.

    How can you tell a fake from the OE? Are the markings or boxes different?

    Not enough that a normal guy can pick out the fakes. Easiest way is to buy from an auto or marine shop, you can be almost 100% sure you are getting legit. If you buy from amazon or ebay, you will probably get fake.
