Yeah the Nissan snub is a surprise to me also. When it came time for me to buy a truck I simply wanted something reliable with four seats and a V6. I shopped around and the Nissan was my best option. They're cheap but there's a reason for it. I guess if that's truly what you want is a bare bones, cheap, utilitarian truck, look no further. Their biggest problems are limited to cars with the Jatco CVT transmissions, very expensive to replace and they don't last very long.

Nissan has a really good history of making solid engines, I will say that, especially the VQ series.

I bought a 2020 Ranger in Dec 2020. It is rated for 7500 lbs towing and I have pulled my 25ft center console with it numerous times without any struggles. I got the lariat package with the bell and whistles and I couldn't be happier with its comfort and drivability. It now has 36K miles and hasn't had an issue. It also gets about 24 mpg!

It's the 2.3L turbo. 270 hp/ 310 lbft of torque. It's surprising how strong it is from 0-70 mph! Compared to my old 1988 ranger with the old 2.3 it's a race car!
Go test drive one, you'll see how fun they are.

I get 24mpg in my F150 3.5L Ecoboost empty on the highway. 3.55 gears 2wdr. XLT.
17-19pmg towing my Alumacraft boat, 2,300pounds.

Check out the mileage on the 1/2 tons and compare it to the mid-sized trucks. you might be surprised in the lack of difference.

Also consider that every engine will burn more fuel the closer you get to it's max towing capacity, and higher speeds. Can a mid-size tow a boat, no doubt about it. Will it get worse gas mileage than a fullsize for the same boat, maybe, depends on engine/drivetrain configuration.

Look at more than just, can it do it? Look at the whole package, your daily usages, and lifestyle. Buy a vehicle that fits your lifestyle. What works for me, may nto work for you. A midsized won't pull my 5th wheel and boat together.

This was my biggest gripe with small trucks. I had a 98 Ranger for a while, single cab 4cyl 2wd. I averaged around 20mpg with it, I think the best I ever got was 24. It wouldn't tow much of a boat and wasn't all that useful for truck stuff.

The 06 Silverado that replaced it gets 14.5 average. An extra $10 a week in gas which wasn't a big deal to me, and it has 4x4 and a V8.

Just 1 word "SILVERADO"

There are a few good choices for what you are looking for. My brother is on the road alot driving maybe 30,000 miles a year? He prefers 4 door 4x4 Ford f150s with ecoboost engines. I got this 4x4 Sport Tacoma back in Feb 2022. I got it for a daily driver, grocery getter, road trip truck.. It will tow my old 19ft skiff but I still use my 2005 F150 with 5.4 V8 for woods and boat pulling. So far we are liking the Tacoma.
