So I got some new wire and lugs. I’m trying to avoid paying for a expensive crimper.

Get yourself an inexpensive hammer crimp tool and some good lugs.
Been using the same type crimp tool for the last 20 years.
Follow up with some double wall adhesive shrink tubing from Genuinedealz and you will have trouble free connections.
ABYC and I believe the airplane industry, does not allow solder cable joints as as they can crack or melt out the solder on overloads.

+1 on the Napa. We've had a Napa back since when you had to set points. Ours is still got the stools at the counter.

Your store is better than mine. I’ve soldered all of mine for more years than I’ll admit to and have never had an issue with one. Salt water will ruin crimped lugs so I really had no choice if I wanted them to be dependable.

Agree �� , solder, is only way I go, if I can. Short wires in batt. Gas tank box , heck no. In those situations, I use the big crimper tool, an shrink, most forget. You need to protect that connection.
Most important connection. I spray with batt. spray crc . That's 1 of the critical connection's.
