My guess is the "tilt assist" cylinder is froze up. You can probably just remove it. Will be harder to tilt but the replacement is probably more than the motor is worth.

Can anyone help me with this problem:
My dad's boat has a 1995 40hp Johnson with manual tilt and trim. There is also a small gas assist piston underneath the motor. It has a lever on the right hand side that you either flip forward to unlock and lift or lower the motor, or flip toward you to lock the motor in place. Last time he used his boat, he tilted the motor up, lowered it onto the trailering bracket, then flipped the trim lever to lock it in place. When we were getting ready to launch this past Sunday, I pushed the lever to the unlocked position and went to lift the motor off the trailering bracket and ....nothing.... The motor is stuck at about a 45 degree angle and only has about 4 inches of play up or down. It's just enough movement that I was able to get the trailering bracket off and use it and get the trailering bracket back on, but I just can't make it budge.
I've sprayed some lubricant around the lever and have tugged on the motor while flipping the lever back and forth hoping the locking pin was just stuck, but that hasn't yielded any results. Is anyone here familiar with my problem, or can at least visualize it and maybe help me troubleshoot it? My dad is planning on taking his boat to Minnesota in 3 weeks and I'd like to try to have it working again for him.

I would think putting it in reverse would put pressure towards the transom. If so then it may move away from the transom in forward motion. Anybody else?

Any time I would put the motor on the jonboat in reverse without having it locked it would lift itself up and out of the water. Down on the delta you wanted it unlocked so it could kick up if you hit something

I've got a little 25 merc and I run it all the time with the "kick-up" unlocked. As long as I am easy on the throttle it never kicks up. If you have to gun it then it will. Mine is a tiller so I just put my left hand on top of motor and push it back if that happens. I'm turned around that way anyhow if going in reverse. If it were mine that's what I would do.
My guess is that the ram is "stuck". With some persuasion you might be able to get it to move. Once it breaks free I'd be betting it will be fine.
If you know someone with a shop that has a press they might be able to free it in seconds. If no shop, I'd pop it off and put it between the rear bumper and a big tree. Then back up. That's just me, I'm not recommended you try this. My thoughts are, it's already broken so breaking it more won't hurt, so long as you don't break the tree or truck.

Last question everyone, if I take the cylinder out, what is there to stop the lower unit of the motor from swinging forward and knocking the transom?
I had a Johnson 30hp manual trim same year.
Since it is manual trim there should be a pin with cotter clip that goes through to set the trim height. Mine has 5 holes. Just make sure that it is set to where it bottoms out on that trim pin.
My guess is that it is probably already set.
