I checked my boat tach with a cool, cheap tach I bought off fleabay a while back. It's about the size of your finger, holds one AAA battery, has a small digital display, and has a single black lead a little over a foot long out of one end. You push a button to power it up, set it for how many cylinders the engine has, and select two stroke or 4 stroke. The black wire requires at least 3 wraps around the #1 spark plug wire. It works! I believe it was less than $10.00.
After checking my boat tach, I checked my mowers, generator, chain saw, and anything I could think of. Great for carb adjustments and idle speeds. Even worked on my Husqvarna Weed Eater at 12,000 RPM! My riding mower now runs right at the factory spec of 550 @ idle, and 1,550 @ WOT.
A very cool little tool, indeed.

Sorry, the one I bought is listed as "Not Available", but here are some I found on Amazon that are similar.

Another option, if you wish to be impressed, you can get yourself a "Treysit Sirometer", old German technology, it uses no power but will show you the rpm's of just about anything.
It converts oscillations into rpm's, and is still made by the German family of the man that invented it. Currently distributed by Briggs and Stratton. Just lay in on or around the running "Object", and it will tell you the rpms. Comes in a handy little case, I gave about $25 for mine. Impresses everyone who sees it. It is also very accurate!
As the video shows, you adjust the wire out until the wire reaches it widest "Swath", and it will show you the RPMs!
