    Default Lithium battery question....

Im not one that catches into all the hype on items, but I'm about to buy two batteries for a pontoon 24v troller set-up. So, a couple questions that I just haven't taken the time to look into, but figured someone here already knows.

If I go with lithium, would I still need to go with two batteries?
If I go with lithium, do I need to buy a special charger?
What is the benefit of lithium for this application?

    Just asking....looking forward to answers!

    Matt

They make 24volt lithium batteries. From whatbI have read you do need a charger suitable for that battery. The benefits are lower weight, longer life ( they are rated to 3000 discharge cycles or more), more trolling time compared to a lead acid battery of the same amp hour rating.

Personally, I wouldn't want a 24 volt battery. I'd rather have two 12 volt batteries. Reason being, if you have a problem with the 24 volt battery, you're stuck until you get a replacement. With 2 12 volt, one goes bad just use a regular 12 volt battery till you get a replacement.

Don't think a single 12v battery will run a 24v trolling motor ... plus it's not recommended to run a old & new battery together.

    You may need another charger.

As tlefire said go with 2-12 volt batteries in case 1 fails.

Running different chemistry/age batteries is not the ideal situation but it will work and keep you on the water.

What you say Pappy is true but I think he means he could temporary use one in place of the one that is bad. He would still have 24 volts. Its not the ideal setup but might save a fishing trip. If it were me I would replace both batteries ASAP as the one that still works could have caused the other one to go bad. You want identical batteries age and size.

And here is why you need to do your research if you're interested in lithium batteries. Of the two companies I researched, both did not recommend purchasing a single 24 or 36 volt battery. Both stated if it went bad, your stuck until your new battery arrives. With 12 volt, you may replace the bad one with a wet cell to keep you on the water till your new battery comes in, usually 2 to 3 days, from the companies I spoke with. Won't hurt a thing for a couple of days. Ideal no, will it hurt the other lithium no, but it can save a fishing trip.

Just for the record, I considered Lithium Pro and Ionic.

Another consideration is with one dedicated 24V battery you can't run any of your accessories off of it. (lights, pumps, etc.)
With (2) 12V batteries wired in series you can connect accessories to either one separately if you so desire. (as said earlier, not ideal but it can be done)
