Default 2001 johnson 115 waterpump kit

I purchased an aftermarket kit for my outboard that is supposed to be item 5001595. I have noticed on the impeller housing there is a small hole at the bottom that looks like some sort of vent. The impeller housing that was on the outboard does not have this vent hole. Is it okay to use this type of housing or should I use the housing without the event. The hole I'm referring to is just to the right of the screw holeName: IMG_20220105_173510.jpg

I think I have heard this is a vent hole to keep the pump from getting "air Locked". But I could be wrong.

Go online to boats.net and see if theirs has that hole. You will need to look it up with the model number of your 115 outboard, there are several. If theirs does not have the hole, I would consider trying another, or maybe JB Marine Weld the hole. Personally, the hole appears to reduce efficiency to the "Push" of the water to go up and get the job done.
My Mercury 115 has no such hole, who knows, maybe some engineer has found advantage to it, who knows.

I ended up using the housing from the old water pump since it was in pretty good shape. I just replaced everything else

Good move. I changed out all my water pump stuff recently, and kept the good old housing for "Future Consideration".

I read somewhere that the hole is to allow the pump to prime and I agree that it seems like it would cut down on the volume of water to cool the motor. Depending on which parts supplier you look up, some housings comes with the hole and some without. My outboard is J115PLSIG. I can't find it on parts suppliers so I just use the J115PLSIE. May be wrong for that but it's close. I wasn't having a problem with my water pump to begin with it was only for preventive maintenance since I did not know how long the previous owner had went before replacing it so at least now I feel confident knowing that it's new. And since it was working before there was no need to make any changes as far as the housing design is concerned. The only concern I really had was if my motor called for the hole and the previous owner had purchased one without or if he actually used the correct housing to begin with.

Etec engines have the air bleed in the inside of the housing. I have installed numerous Crossflow & 60 Degree water pumps with that hole in the housing.
