He said it had spring and one ball behind the pin, thinking he might have lost a ball or two. Any thoughts?

Looks like there are three balls in the parts diagram. I'm not sure what they do, I've never had a Merc of that vintage apart.

I agree with everyone else, find a new mechanic.

Sounds like ball detents to hold it in forward nuetral or reverse. That should not prevent it from going into gear. It just want stay in gear

The obvious question is: Did reverse work on it before He laid hands on it?

Yes it did, I know I will find a different mechanic. He was good but I think age has caught up with him.

Thank you, I brought it home now to start trouble shooting it.

If you can't get it fixed cheaply, worst case scenario, does SEI make a lower unit that fits it? On my old boat, my lower hand grenaded after a real life boat mechanic fixed a bent prop shaft. Then he wouldn't stand behind his work. I checked on a new or rebuilt Yamaha lower and they were all north of $2000. Talking with a parts guy at a local dealership and he told me to get an SEI. It cost $850. He said he had sold bunches of them and only knew of one that had to be sent back in and it was replaced. They have a 3 year warranty and he said that company stood behind it. They're made in China so I was leery of it but the fit and finish was very good and it never gave me one minutes trouble and I used it a lot. If you go that route, make sure you do the break in exactly like it says to. I'm assuming with the 8 hour break in, much of it at a very low RPM, that the gears have to be work hardened.
