Question Let's hear your prop upgrade stories. Did you get the results you expected?

    I'll start.
Bought a used Alumacraft 2016 Competitor Sport with Evinrude 75hp Etec engine.
Original prop was 13.25" by 17 spline. I would top out at 32-33mph GPS @ 4800rpms.
Boat wouldn't get on plane with 4 adults.
RPMs are supposed to be 5200-5600 at WOT.

I was over prop'd and needed an upgrade. I also plan on pulling a 4 person tube during eth summer for the grandkids.
I started researching an new I needed at least a 15 pitch prop to get the rpm in the right range. I also wanted a 4 blade prop for tubing and 4 adults, hoping to get up on plane.

I ended up buying a 13 pitch 4 blade Solas Ameda prop. While I haven't gotten it to full throttle yet. I did get it out a couple weekends ago and got on plane with 3 adults in teh boat and the 4 man tube in tow. tube had one adult and one child. Got up on plane no problem. I was holding 20mph and 4200 rpm towing. I was impressed. Hopefully I'll get a chance to test out top end with and without the crew.

How did your prop changes go?

Getting it "Pitch Perfect" for many boats starts with the expected load in the boat and # of passengers. What's right for solo is off often when you have passengers, or vice versa.
Especially with the older 2 strokes, I feel it is very important to wind 'em up for a stretch just about every outing, as Dad said "Blow the soot out of 'em". And I do. I pull my plugs on my outboard, and small engines, from time to time, and fully believe plugs tell a story. I clean 'em, and put them back in. The plugs kinda reflect combustion chamber condition.
It truly is a compromise. That's a pretty good load on your 75hp, hopefully it will work out for you.
Looking forward to others and their experience.

I have played with them quite a bit. Usually the results go from pretty good to just about perfect, unless the prop was way off to start with.

It's a lot of trial and error, and a good relationship with a prop shop will save you some money.

My current motor (75hp Suzuki 2 stroke, on a 17' Tracker deep V) came with a monster stainless prop that had a destroyed hub. I went on Ebay and found a used Turning point 4 blade in 17 pitch that was pretty cheap to start with. It was way too much. Went down to a 15p 3 blade, which is just about perfect. Keeps the cruise RPMs fairly low and runs just over 5k WOT. I also have a 13p that I will run for pulling tubes or when loaded heavy.
