    Default Help identifying this outboard

Hey folks. Been away from this site for a LONG time. Bought a jon boat the other day and it has this Mercury 25 hp outboard on it. I am wanting to identify the thing and learn as much as I can about it as it has been out of the water for a couple years and will need a little maintenance. The serial number sticker is pretty useless as you can see in the pics. You can sorta make out something, but my eyes really can't. Plus they were taken with my phone so the quality is not the best. Any help is appreciated.

What are you looking for? It is a mercury 25. It appears to be an early 90's model to me but I am no expert. I believe the earlier models only had blue stripes and no red. It is hard to tell from your picture what color the stripes on the motor calin are. Can't make out the serial # on your picture.

You could try rubbing ink or something over the serial number. Might make it legible.

I agree that it is a late 80s to early 90s model.

1995 is my guess. Mercury uses generations for their parts, not specific years. Depending on parts you might not need to know more than a mid 90's 25.

Use 95 and double check that replacement parts look like what you have and you should be fine.

Isn't there usually a second Id plate on the engine block?

Before you do too much digging, check the compression. I know a lot of those smaller mercury motors used a special coating on the block and don't have a traditional head and are almost impossible to get bored if they have cylinder damage.

I'd also guess early 90's. I think they used many of the same parts on these from the late 80s to 2000s as they were essentially the same engine with tweaks to the cowlings and decals.

Thanks for the info. I will report back with whatever I find. Also, I presume this is a 2 stroke? What is the oil/fuel ratio?

    Definitely a 2 stroke. Can't go wrong with 50:1
