They make a spray can foaming engine degreaser. Most of the electronics should be potted and not effected by water. I still try not to get all of the wiring connectors, coils, and such too wet.
Just noticed that my 2001 Mercury 40 HP ELPTO motor has a little buildup inside the cowl and mainly under where you would pour oil into the tank that must of spilled there.
Anyway, just wondered how safe if was to wipe as much of the excess out of there AND THEN use a spray on degreaser, followed by using a water hose to rinse it off and away.
Has anyone done this before, and, did you have to cover anything OR do anything special/extra so as not to cause harm???
Thanks in advance for your input.

Thank you for your response.
You basically reinforced what I thought, but as I am not mechanically inclined anymore, it pays to get counsel!
They have a spray also called super clean. RMD creations you tube channel uses it alot with good results to clean old outboards prior to working on them. Being a spray you can put it where you want more easily and less likely to get it on unwanted areas.

Water hose should be fine. I would caution the use of a pressure washer, they can pretty easily force water into a sealed connector.

I use a great product from The Dollar Tree called "Totally Awesome". Fantastic stuff.
Spray on your hands for a great hand cleaner, too.
It also cleans the white cloudy residue that collects on the mid unit of my outboard motor.
I find new uses for it all the time, I have spray bottles of it all around the house and garage.
Excellent shower cleaner, too...
Lowes even carries it now, in half gallon jugs.
This is twice in the last week or 2 that this cleaner has came up. I am going to have to look into some

Yes, do!
I just learned that it cleans the white residue off my outboard midshaft that looks like some kind of calcium or similar. Spray it on, spread it around with a paint brush, rinse off and viola! Does wonders with stainless steel, including sinks. However, if you use it on glass, it will clean but leave a residue if you don't rinse it. So in all uses, rinse well.
"Totally Awesome" makes several types of cleaners, this one is yellow, don't confuse it with other colors/compositions.
Yep, You can get it at the dollar store
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

BTW, as degreasers go, most if not all of them have been weakened down so much that some do very little at all. I used to use Gunk Engine Degreaser in the spray can, and years ago it would fade paint if you didn't rinse it off in 5 or 10 minutes. Not now, it's just about useless. Kind of like those warnings I see all the time "This product has been known to cause cancer in California". I expect to see that warning on a jug of milk any day now...
