Thread: Trim tab .

Looking at the tab from the back, you would want to move the tab to the right, which will steer the motor left. It acts like a mini-rudder.

If you were looking at it from the bottom like a clock, you would want the tab somewhere around 1:00.

Glad I asked because I would have turned tab to left to steer boat left .

The trim tab affects the boat in the exact opposite of the rudder. This is because it compensates for the torque of the prop and not steering. Start with the tab straight. Then if needed move the back of it a little at a time until the pull is gone.

IO removed the plug and used an extension to release bolt . The tab still did not turn till I loosened the bolt in front of the tab . Question is 'Did I have to remove the plug at all ? Will take pictures if this is clear as mud .Do both of these adjust or one is used to set position and one to lock position ?

After moving the tab a little at a time I have it set as far right as it will allow . It is better but still needs to be trimmed up to have little resistance to turn right if let go . thoughts ?does have a break a-way jack plate .

Why, are letting go of handle ?

The point is that it is murder on your arm
on a mile run . Saying to let go of steering is not what any should do but trying to convey picture of situation .

I think there should be only 1 bolt holding the trim tab. Standing in the rear of the boat and moving the back edge to the starboard side should compensate for the prop rotation torque.
On some motors you have to remove the trim tab to get to a bolt holding the lower unit but I have never seen 2 bolts holding the trim tab.
