Default Newbie needs help - trim motor running constantly

Looking for help! I have a 1989 evinrude xp150. Loaded up Sunday and headed home with no issues. Got home and the trim motor was running. The only thing that stops it is to disconnect the battery. When I hit the trim up button it stops until I release it. I pulled the relays and swapped them and it has the same result. When I hit the down button, the relay does not click. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I’ve disconnected all four switches and the problem is still there. Confused by the relays because I switched them and the problem was consistent

If it's not the switch, you got a bad wire somewhere that is being energized.

A couple of years ago I awoke one morning and could hear a whine in the garage. On my boat the trim down button was energized and the plastic top of the trim motor had melted all over the place. Wound up replacing the trim motor and the transom trim switch.
Lesson: I installed quality battery disconnect switches at each battery, and they are off when I travel and when I park, pretty much anytime the boat is out of the water unless I am working or checking over the boat. With the switches I have, you can turn them off and only then remove the knobs - anti theft and mess proof.
Since you will be working with your tilt trim, it's a good time to suck out all the old trim fluid you can and replace it. I use a turkey baster (Dollar Store) and refill it with "Valvoline Dextron 2 High Mile ATF With Stop Leak And Seal Conditioners". I stroke it a few cycles and flush it again. It doesn't hold much, and don't be surprised to find some metal shavings in it. I am doing that myself every year or two. That little unit is called into action quite often, is easily neglected, and that fluid can get pretty nasty. Cheap maintenance.

They didn't list the exact one I went with, but this one is just like it. Momentary up - Off - Momentary Down.
Rated for 15 amps @12 volts. Again, this one I used at the transom location.

If you were asking about the Battery Disconnect Switches, it was these. Some don't have removable knobs, mine did. A very good extra. They are in the $15 - $20 range (A piece), pretty good for our uses.
