    Default Yamaha sho 175 Opinions

I recently bought a Alumacraft XB 200 bass boat with a Yamaha sho 175 on it. I asked the dealer to swap it out for a Mercury (thats all I ever owned) but he would not because controls and everything were installed. He was a Mercury dealer also.

He looked at me like I was nuts and said you will love a Yamaha motor and if you ever trade/sell Yamaha has the highest resale value, so he says?.

Anyhow, I only have about 30 hours on it and so far its awesome. I have read good and bad reviews on it just like on all the brands.

I was just curious if anyone has any first hand knowledge of these motors good or bad based on experience?

    It is a 2019 model sho 175 4 stroke

    Thanks for you're comments

My opinion only, it will out preform the Mercury hands down. You’ll never go back. That’s from a life long Johnson guy.

A friend of mine who is the service manager at a large marina in Va Beach tells his customers that if you want to go far, buy an Evinrude. If you want to go fast buy a Merc. If you want to go far and fast, buy a Yamaha.

I don't blame him. You're the only person I've ever heard of that would want to swap a perfectly good Yamaha for a Mercury.

I also have the 2019 Yamaha SHO 175 and I am tickled to death over the performance. In a way I wished I had bought the 200 HP motor since my boat is rated for the 200 and it only runs about 38-40 MPH but other than that I love the fuel mileage, the holeshot, the quietness, and reliability.

I hope the Yamaha serves you well, but like you, I would have wanted the Mercury. Growing up, my family only wanted Johnsons and Evinrudes. My Brother still has the 1957 Evinrude 18 Fastwin that Dad bought brand new, still runs great, very little has ever been done to it. We didn't like the old Mercurys, but I have grown quite fond of the 1992 Mercury 115 that I have. Just the other day I replaced the original thermostat that finally stuck open and would not allow it to get over a cold natured hissy it had developed. All is better now.
