9.9 part 2
As I mentioned i picked up my new Mercury 9.9 short shaft elec start, it will be going on a 14ft v hull smokercraft Big fisherman model, i have a few questions that maybe some can chime in on,
(1) should i purchase some kind of a doel fin to help get the boat on plane now, or wait till i see if it will need one. are these beneficial other than get the boat on plane quicker any pros and cons on them, which is the preferred brand.
(2) service man at Bass Pro shops suggested i add some kind of an additive to the fuel, he did not mention brand.
any suggestions it it's a good idea.

ps, I had a 25hp Yamaha on this boat, i had to practically get the motor almost wide open to get it on plane then i could back off a little to keep it on plane

If the 25hp just got it on plane you out of luck getting it on plane with the 9.9.
I always try use get non ethanol fuel and treat all mine with Sta-Bil marine fuel stabilizer.

hmm! was hoping that possibly the fin on the bottom of the motor would help, Note: i had no choice but to get the 9.9hp motor, most places i fish have a 10hp limit.

If your 25hp motor would barely plane that little 14ft boat then there was something wrong with your setup. A 25hp on a 14' tinny will fly.

I had a 25 Johnson on a 14ft Alumacraft. I never had any trouble with it planing, but it did porpoise something awful at anymore than 1/2 throttle. A Hydrosport SE hydrofoil took care of it, boat handled really well after that, no more porpoising.
I think they do help quite a bit, especially on boats that are stern heavy.

I'd hold off on the fin for now. I would buy an inductive tach though so you can see what rpm's you are running. Prop selection on a small outboard is critical and new 4 strokes really need to be running wide open near the top of the recommended operating range.
I never really worry much about additives for a small 3 gallon tank (assuming that's what you have). In the event it gets stale just pour it out into a mower or something or worst case dump it on some ants.

Just my opinion, find the fin you want and buy it. I’ve had one on several small motors and never been disappointed with any of them. I made the one on my 40 Mariner I run mow, copied the size and shape from one on line. She’s never gonna fly but it will help some with the way it behaves.

i was thinking about the tach, had one on a single cyl bike, i see the hardline's are popular, not sure of the redline rpm's yet, but example let's say it over revs by 3 hundred rpms with the stock prop, i see on youtube where some owners are installing a zip tie on the carb stop to limit the travel of the throttle plate in wide open position, if this is done then i take it the boat will be possibly 2 mph slower, now on the other side of this, if i were to change pitch to get it into the right engine rpm's would i gain much in speed.
