What size and serial #
Can the oil tank be removed from the motor and mix oil in the gas tank like the old style motors. Have done this on a 1991 johnson with no problems but know nothing about mariner motors. Oil tank sensor has gone out twice and have had to replace tank twice as the sensor is built into tank.

I had a ‘88 Mariner that had it disconnected but it was done by a butcher first time. The next mechanic was very good and spoke poorly of the first guys efforts, and straightened it out. The older v6 Mercury’s had the gear to drive the oil pump up near the top of the crank and it sometimes lost lubricant somehow and would go out. Bad part was by the time the alarms went off the motor was already toast. Don’t know if yours fits this category but now you know what I know.
My ‘95 40hp Mariner also has an oil tank with a sensor that was bad when I bought the boat. The alarm is disconnected and I make sure that the tank stays close to full, all good. Lots cheaper than $135 oil tank plus install. The other alarm that was going off was for the overheat sensor. My mechanic told me that as long as it was peeing you couldn’t overheat. It’s disconnected too. Runs fine every time out.

I have seen motors peeing but would overheat at higher RPMs. This is because the impeller is wearing out and doesn't have the volume of water needed to cool the motor. A partial blockage can cause this too.

This is on a 40 horse engine. Have decided to go back oil tank route one more time. Thanks for everyone's input.
