I was in the same situation last year and asked the same question. I was told that Tohatsu also makes the small hp Mercury motors.

Tohatsu is more popular than you would think. They’ve carried many other names including Nissan, Mercury and others I’m told. They’re still here after others have gone away. Up2Specks has 2 of them, he could answer any questions you may have. Find him on the home page now and the Florida board all the time.

Just put a 9.9 Tohatsu on my boat. Electric start, power tilt, and EFI. Great motors. Have had it about 4 months but I've owned other Tohatsu on other boats I've had.

I have a 1436 jon and just put a brand new 2021 Mercury 9.9 short shaft with electric start. I looked at Tohatsu, but the Mercury has shifting built into the throttle handle and other features that, although small creature comforts, I’ve grown to like. I know Tohatsu makes it, but the Tohatsu motor doesn’t have that feature or name recognition (ie resale value) to most people. My two cents

May have changed but at one point recently Tohatsu was the only 9.9hp with EFI. EFI is very nice, but at the same time some prefer a carb for simplicity and lower repair cost down the road if the high pressure pump and injectors mess up. May want to take that into consideration.

Carb’d Mercury with electric start is about 10 lbs lighter than equivalent Tohatsu with EFI. If weight is a factor might consider that as well. Good luck in your purchase and have fun!

Those Tohatsu prices seem high. Im not up to speed on nation wide pricing or how covid has affected prices but I know the Tohatsus are a few hundred cheaper here. Mercury is usually a bit more so that price sounds about right. I don't know much at all about Hondas. I bought a short shaft elec start 25hp Yamaha this past summer for 3800 otd for what that may be worth.
