Moeller sells a fantastic (much better than Krylon or Rustoleum) aerosol paint which is color matched for outboards. Just wash your motor, scuff it up with a scotch brite or something, tape up the decals and spray it. It'll look very close factory. Nothing to it. I painted several old motors with it.

When I restored my boat, I wanted the motor to shine just as much. Stripped the cowling down, repainted, applied new decals, then clear coated with auto clear coat over the decals and paint. The decals won't peel and it'll all stay shiny. I can't remember where I got the paint, but it was a perfect match.

Silverside, I was going to suggest a clay bar but I think that is too far gone for that. Furflyin, you did a fine job on that Yammie.

I ordered them online. Honestly don't remember, but I just did a Google search for Yamaha outboard decals. I'll look later and see if any site rings a bell, but I doubt I remember. I've slept a bunch of times since then.

I looked at the site thinking that might be where mine came from but I don't think that's where I got mine, but they certainly look like they're good replications.

I suggest you get it clean first, then see what you have to work with.
No scrubbing or abrasives at this time, think gentle.

That one looks pretty far gone.

You can undoubtedly clean it up and make it look better, but to make it like new it would require a repaint.

Scotch brite and soapy water does wonders for cleaning off years of oxidation and grime, without terribly damaging the existing finish.
