If a scotch bite is too coarse, try the pads that look like a scotch bite at the dollar store. Much less abrasive but I have good luck scrubbing stuff up pretty well with em. I’m another vote for a repaint though. Just bought a ‘74 today that has been repainted and new stickers, looks good. Have to look into a clear coat on the cover, that’s a good idea.

If you want an easy clear coat, go on Ebay and buy a couple cans of 2K clear. It's not terribly expensive and gets you fairly close to an automotive style paint job. Wear a respirator though.
Unlike what was posted earlier, I do not recommend clearing over vinyl decals.

use a polishing compound and mineral sprits with random orbit polisher .i used this on a 75 camper van .tried on a place ,then had to do the whole thing. made it look like it just rolled out of the factory.

The first step I use, gets grime off pretty and starts the "polishing" is spray furniture polish. Pledge or the likes, but I just use the cheap wally world stuff. I use it on my motor after I get home from each trip. Keeps water spots off too.
