    Default Plastic tanks

Been looking at plastic 3 and 6 gal tanks. Some of the descriptions state "above deck only". That confuses me. Below my transom casting deck is open on the front. Is that still considered below deck?

I would think as long as it is open on the front it would be okay

No, your casting deck doesn't create a "below deck" space. The problem with below-deck gas tanks is that they ABSOLUTELY require an external vent. The plastic tanks you are thinking of are vented at the filler. Below-deck tanks (either metal or plastic) have a vent hose connection that you run to an above-deck fitting.

Thanks. That is the what was in my head but couldn't put it into words. I appreciate your help.

Boats designed for a vented tank should have some sort of ventilation setup. Mine has two scoops in the deck, one facing towards, one backwards, that allow air to circulate through the bilge.

You do not want a vented tank in a closed up bilge area. Gas fumes are heavier than air and will collect, a lot of boats have gone up in flames because of it.

Hahaha... I just realized that I am over-thinking this. My other boat has a perfectly good Merc 6 gal steel tank. If I just put a Merc fitting on the OMC fuel line I can move the tank to the boat I'm using that day. Plastic tanks

That 6 gallon steel tank is vented at the cap also....just like the plastic one.
