Default Grey Beard brain trust question

I recently came into a 1978 Evinrude 25hp that was said to be running when parked in 2015. It is not locked up, The carburetor bowl looked as nasty as expected. On disassembly for the idle adjustment screw had a material around the threads at outer face of the carb body. It looked like some type of putty, and may have been soft at one time. It seems to serve to give resistance to the threads to prevent the screw moving when running, and likely to seal air from the hole.

What to replace that "putty" with is the question.

That is the air jet packing. It comes with a carb kit but I don't know where you can buy just that. You might check with a dealer.

I would try something like Loctite 518. It will dry, but not super hard and you shouldn't have any trouble unscrewing it or adjusting periodically.

Thank you. The screw moves easily, and without some friction would be out of adjustment in seconds.
