    This is on a 1973 Johnson 50 hp motor and I have no idea what it is for. I doesn't look like it would be a weed guard

    it is spring loaded so it's down all the time. Is it for trolling?

    Trolling plate....going slow spring will hold it down....going fast it will over ride the spring and let it come up. They work good.....only draw back is it will be down when you have the boat in reverse....have to back up slow.

    Not to hi-jack the thread, but do they make one to fit a 250 hp honda? Idle speed is 3+ mph and i'd like to be about 2.

    I ran one on a 115 Yamaha for a number of years....click on link to read about them
