    Default In need of a trailer


    My 80's 14 ' jon boat ( Lowe) has just become too heavy and burdensome to load in and out of local reservoirs, especially those with steep ramps.

    So, I want to acquire a trailer. I feel like I don`t require anything fancy for an older model Jon boat .

    What should I look for in the way of a trailer?

    What would a fair price be?

    P.S. I`ve been combing Craigslist but almost always see the trailer sold with the boat. Don`t need the boat.

    A 14' jon boat that has been sitting in the back of a truck is going to be really light. Therefore, the smallest trailer it will fit on will work. Biggest thing to look for is RUST. It is the enemy of all things that roll and go into the water. Lights and bunks can be easily and cheaply replaced. Even springs and axles can be replaced but at higher cost. Personally, I would look for a used PWC trailer. I see them all the time on Facebook marketplace for less than $500 (some as low as about $200) in good shape - some even galvanized.

    Expand your search on Craigslist. You must be careful. If there are no pictures or a brief description ignore them.
    There are deals out there you just have to spend some searching time.

    Craigslist has been largely deserted, since they started charging a fee for ads. Facebook Marketplace seems to have replaced it.

    You will want one that is already set up for a flat bottom, the bunks and bow stop will be separate. You'll also need to bring a tape measure and make sure that the trailer is long enough for the bunks to stick out 1-2" beyond the transom. The bow stop can often be adjusted quite a bit to accommodate boats of different lengths, figure that into your measurements.

    As for tires, bigger is better. I like 12" wheels at a minimum. The bearings and tires live longer.
