Default 2012 Merc 60HP 4 stroke efi long beep alarm and won't crank over

    Hello!

Title of thread pretty much says it all. Running from spot to spot, everything seemed fine. Fished a spot for maybe 5 minutes, no fish, so went to fire up and move to another spot. Turned key, got the initial short beep/alarm like normal and then turned key to start and then long beep/alarm and NOTHING! Motor wouldn't even turn over. Tried a couple of times with the same result and then finally started like normal. The same thing happened the next day, at the exact same spot on the lake, same scenario. Finally started after about 4 tries. Only thing I did was check kill switch (flipped on and off a couple of times). It was the last spot of the day on the first day before quitting. Second day we moved to another spot, fished for 20 min, started up fine, then got off the lake. I've looked up the alarm codes and the long continuous alarm could be over heating, low oil pressure, battery voltage too low/high, coolant sensor failure, engine speed limiter. But not seeing anything that says the motor would not even turn over.

    Anybody have any ideas?

    Thanks in Advance!
    Ty

Well, since it is before starting you can eliminate some of those potential alarm code results. Oil pressure is non existent at that point as is engine speed. So, could be over heating/coolant sensor or battery voltage - or something totally unrelated to the long beep. First thing I would do is a stress test on the battery to determine if there is a bad cell giving you insufficient voltage under load.

Kill switch might have a bad connection. Definitely worth checking out.

Yes first check cranking battery connections, pull them off and clean, if you have battery spray protect use it , if not , just a little grease with itty bitty paint brush. Then check where hot wire goes to starter solenoid for lose connection, then hot wire from solenoid to starter motor, then check ground wire coming from battery. When you are checking this look at the very front of motor at ecm ( brain box) and see if it has the 2 plug or single plug? Should have 2 plug. There was a problem with the last yrs. of 2 plugs.

If you could give serial #, I'll check in the books tomorrow.

Your best option is to have it scanned pretty soon. The freeze frame history will show what happened to cause the alarm. You can then address the known issue. I've had several customers guess and throw money at those motors until they reach their breaking point.
    I'd rather be fishing.

Freeze frames give on most, fault seconds helps

Thanks for the responses! Here is some additional info. New cranking battery last year - upsized to handle additional electronics. Prior to new battery, after extended periods of trolling/fishing (no big motor) when i went to start the big motor, it would start fine but the fish finders would power off. That problem has disappeared since the new battery - i didn't think it was a low battery situation this time due to electronics not shutting down. I will check connections, etc. Serial number is 1C160748. I said its a 2012 - at least the boat is a 2012 lowe stinger. At one point I ran across some where that it might be a 2011 motor - not sure on that. I checked the ECM area (I think , front side of the engine) - not exactly sure what I'm looking at but there is a box with a silver plate that has a single plug going into it. Only other issue I have had lately is the bendix gear on starter would not engage - starter motor would spin but bendix gear would not engage. Sprayed a little contact cleaner on the bendix gear shaft and then some lubricant. That seems to be working ok now. I didn't think there was an issue with the kill switch - accidentally flipped the kill switch before and motor would crank over but never start. This situation, the motor would not crank over along with the long alarm.

    Thanks again for the help.

Ok, so I checked battery connections and connections to the starter, etc. Everything is tight and clean. ECM has only one plug.

If the bendix is spinning and not engaging the flywheel it means one of four things. You have either a bad battery, bad battery cable, bad connection or bad starter. The single plug PCM means it is a Merc CDS G3 computer and you are better off to take it to a local dealer and have it checked to see what the fault code is. After 2004, all motors give a continuous alarm when a fault occurs.
