Does the choke work properly?
82 Merc 9.8 will only start with starting fluid. Runs beautifully after starting. I have cleaned carb, changed all carb gaskets, new plugs, new fuel line, new coils. What am I missing?

What Bricks said.
Make sure that the detent works properly and holds the choke after pulling on it a few times.
Had a 25 Johnson that was a bear to start, the choke detent was broke, you could close the choke but it would open slightly after one or two pulls.
Also had the issue on my 75 Suzuki, solenoid would close the choke fine when you were watching but apparently let it go when cranking. Had high resistance in the circuit somewhere.

Well looky. The throttle lever was cracked and came off in 2 pieces. I think that maybe when turning to the start position it slipped therefore not sending enough fuel. The starting fluid provided enough then the motor just kept running. Theory only. The new part install will verify that when it comes.
