On my motor that would be called a power-pack and the coils would be on top of it separate of the pack itself. What is your model # on that 150 Mariner? I probably PM you to keep dander low..

May be relevant not sure, but never hurts to learn about older engines in full detail,

0C156789 is the Model number I think

No sir, your model will begin with a 715 #. Not sure what that number is probably a parts #. Engine model and serial should be on transom bracket down low middle of transom!

Looked over the diagrams for ignition / voltage regulator as well as fly wheel and stator on that motor. Unless you have modified or added any additional electronics in the recent past I would have to concur with Grandpoobah on this one. Most the older engines are getting modified slightly each and every year to meet newer tech demands. Upgrade your voltage regulator, change wires and coils if necessary. A engine fire is bad news and I'm glad you caught it before it got way out of hand. Old motors can run great, just takes a little time, money and TLC!
