Looked over the diagrams for ignition / voltage regulator as well as fly wheel and stator on that motor. Unless you have modified or added any additional electronics in the recent past I would have to concur with Grandpoobah on this one. Most the older engines are getting modified slightly each and every year to meet newer tech demands. Upgrade your voltage regulator, change wires and coils if necessary. A engine fire is bad news and I'm glad you caught it before it got way out of hand. Old motors can run great, just takes a little time, money and TLC!
Man you guys are great. Thanks for all your help. I will try and update when the part comes in. Thanks again.
