No replacement for displacement. Especially if they are restricting a 30hp to be a 25.

I hear you on that. To be honest, my only concern is the weight. They list the electric start short shaft with trim as 180 something pounds. I'll add a Vance breakaway plate to give me some setback plus let me scoot over obstructions in shallow water and that's another 20 lbs. But current setup weighs about 135 lbs plus 25 lbs for my trim unit....so it's only an extra 40 lbs overall. Prob not enough to matter.

    Couple of notes:

If you're on Facebook, there's a few very large private groups running duckboats, these groups have a whole lot of real world experience running this class of motors with duck hunting loads. The Toh25 has been tried a lot and works for some, but usually once loads start increasing, most move to the 40.

I have the Toh40 with that large multi tiller, I had this motor on a Havoc 1653DB duck boat with a rear deck, and 6" setback, and running in shallows the handle would drag the deck and got a little annoying. But I run those shallows more often than most. The Havoc 1653VJ I have now doesn't have this deck, so much better, plus I have a hydraulic kick/jackplate with 6" setback. You might proceed cautiously with that 6" setback with a shorter Yam handle. That could get uncomfortable too. Maybe you or dealer measure from motor clamp to end of tiller and transfer to your boat to check that to make sure you got enough reach.

I also ran an Alweld 1548VJ with a 95# 25Yam 2-stroke. That was a killer lightweight setup with a mid height casting deck. Very good hp to weight ratio.

Consider a tiny tach...cheap on amazon. So you can follow your rpms and prop it correctly. Did that later with my 40 and found my 16pitch ss prop was a bit too much, couldn't reach top rpm. 14pitch now is like another animal, powers up easy and holds a load at slower speeds, much more comfortable to handle.

I can give you two places to call to discuss with shops who have lots of experience and might help you.
Cuz Outboards (501) 352-2952 Derek or Brandon these guys seriously know their business. Highly recommended. In Arkansas, see their FB page.
Backwoods Landing (256) 355-4080 N. Alabama they move a lot of midsized rigs like these.

Lastly, at the time I bought my 40 a few years ago, dealer had sold at least 200 of these. The owner told me he pulled the restrictor plate off most every one before they left. He said one came back with unrelated warranty issues.

The three hole yamaha and three hole Mega tohatsu (with a fake mega for backup) was the talk for a while.

So I actually have a 1988 Yamaha 30 3 cylinder on the boat now. It's mounted on a panther 55 trim unit which is 7" of setback and the small factory tiller handle is annoying since I dont have a winged or split rear deck. I had bought a multifunction yamaha tiller to install but I couldn't get it to operate smoothly so I'm going to sell it or possibly put it on a new Yamaha if I go that route. I did bolt it up and it is about perfect for my boat....only real issue is I have a long shaft on a short transom so the handle is very high. It was actually nicer being that high for the factory tiller but not for the big one. I'll take some measurements of it before I go check out any motors in person so I know what the Tohatsu tiller will be like.

I do plan to keep the Yamaha 30 in the event I find a good deal on a 20" transom hunting boat. Motor is very clean and has 130 psi across all three but it doesn't push the boat but 30mph so I think it may need some fine tuning

Or you could let Cuz work up that 30, put a short shaft lower, repaint the cowl, and you’d have a screamer lol. Them boys can flat do it! That’s a nice Yam you have I’d keep it too.

Does anyone know if the Tohatsu 25 is actually tilt and trim and not just tilt? Would be disappointed if it can't actually be trimmed while under power.

Love that rig Eagle 1! I would really like to eventually get a War Eagle 548 or 648 myself.
