    Default Power tilt fluid

    Hi
Going to check my Honda power tilt and trim fluid level.
Do i need special fluids, or is most any hydraulic fluid ok?
I'm assuming it is hydraulic fluid.

    Thanks

Dextron ATF is a good substitute for outboard tilt and trim oil, especially since the tilt-trim unit is a hydraulic system. As a substitute, Penzoil company has a marine tilt-and-trim hydraulic fluid that can be used for power steering and tilt-and-trim systems.

    Check the manual.

Some will take ATF, some use engine oil, some probably need PTT fluid specifically.

I have been using ATF in my Yamaha but found Star Brite Tilt Trim on Amazon and got a jug of it. I am about to pull my system apart and replace the o-rings and fluids so decided I would use the "right stuff".

Your level should not be low unless you have a cylinder leaking.

G is right, hydraulic trim as well as hydraulic steering or any other for that matter is a sealed system. If you need to add fluid then you have another issue, a leak somewhere. Are you noticing any problems?

My thoughts on fluids. I always try to use OEM or manufacturers fluids. They do add special additives and sometimes substitutes can compromise the performance or longevity in my mind. I look at it like this, most of us spare no expense on boats, motors, electronics, trolling motors, gear etc. Why get cheap when it comes to the big money item like your motor? I agree something's may can be substituted, but I prefer peace of mind. If a problem arises it will never be in the back of your mind if the improper fluid was the culprit.

I just replaced my seals in my hydraulic steering and ponied up for Sea Star fluid even though the internet folks say all sorts of fluid would suffice. I can afford $10 more every few year's to service my components right, in the scheme of things it's cheap insurance to me. Just my two cent's on the matter and I'm sure many will disagree.

Makes me think something is wrong.
I think it's just what Honda uses
