Default Immediate Recall On Harbor Freight Jack Stands

"If you've got a set of Harbor Freight jack stands somewhere in your garage, stop using them immediately because many of them have just been recalled over pawls that could "disengage from the extension lifting post" under a shift in weight, causing them to suddenly collapse. We feel like this shouldn't have to be said but we'll say it anyway: bad jack stands that could suddenly fall are extremely dangerous and being underneath a car supported by one could very easily result in serious injury or death.
According to Harbor Freight, the recall applies to three-ton and six-ton heavy-duty steel jack stands with item numbers 56371, 61196, and 61197. The number on the three-ton units can be found on the label at the top while the six-ton stands have their numbers printed in the yellow section of the label found on the base."

I have had mine for a few years, and used them many times without incident, but back they go. No receipt needed. My 3 tons are the 61196 models. I just finished a complete brake job on them with a GMC just the other day.

I should have mentioned, many may use jack stands like these to support their boat trailers for wheel hub or bearing work, they are very popular as I read somewhere there are about 450,000 sets of these out there. If you or anybody you know have jack stands, they need to look them over to see if they are this type. I really liked mine, used them a bunch, but no more. I will be taking them back soon.

I have a set myself. To be honest, I have never fully trusted Harbor Freight Chineesium...I always used a 3 ton floor jack (also harbor freight) to lift and then placed vehicle on jack stands but always left the floor jack in place and with a little pressure on it. Then I'd usually place the tire/wheel under somewhere as well.

I plan on returning my set though. Any recommendations on some good ones to replace these with?

They need to do a followup on that to clarify something. My 3 ton jack stands from Harbor Freight do no have the item number on them as they described, however they do have a model number that is P38846. When I google P38846 it pulls up item number 61196 on Harbor Freight's website which is included in the recall, and mentions SKU number 38846. So is Model Number P38846 are part of the recall or not?

I don't know Art.....if they have customer service number or email address....i believe I would be contacting them to see if that's part of the recall. Or take them to HF store and find out.

I'll probably just drag them to the store one day, my guess is that the people at the counter won't know either.

I don't see a number on mine. It's black and I'm not sure if it's HF or Northern Industrial.

I appreciate the 'heads up' on the jack-stand recall since I did purchase a set from HF about six months ago. After checking their website and the numbers referred by you in this thread... my set was not among the item numbers designated by the recall.

Here are mine and what they look like, item 61196.
Three ton, gray and black, with the box and number.
Might take them back Monday while a big sale is going on.
