Default Synthetic 2 Stroke Oils - Current Minor Engine Issue

So I have run into a very minor engine issue (1999-2000 Yamaha C60) where when I am just idling for fairly long periods of time the engine overheat alarm will come on. Still wizzing water and in fact I just replaced my impeller and water pump gaskets, plenty of oil too. What I have found to "break" it from the alarm situation is just run it WOT on plane for a bit and it quits. It doesn't do it every time I idle around either.

It has just started happening to me and I lay the blame right at the feet of the fact I just installed a new-to-me SI unit and I idle around looking for stuff more.

Finally getting around to my question(s), I have had pretty good luck (after a few years of having to rebuild carbs) with Mystik synthetic blend 2 stroke oil. Normally I get it at Bass Pro but since we haven't been traveling much I have not made it there (if it is even open) to get oil. I started looking on Amazon and found Star Brite Super Premium (blue jug) synthetic blend 2 stroke oil and just today Royal Purple Full Synthetic 2 stroke oil. Has anybody run the Royal Purple and how did you like it? I use Royal Purple in my truck and like it a lot. My only apprehensions about are A) price and B) there is a review on Amazon stating that the jug says not for use below freezing. My fishing boat is also my duck boat and it sees well below freezing temps every year. In fact my boating season is weighted to the fall and winter months not the spring and summer.

Is anyone using the Star Brite super premium?

And I do plan to examine my oil injection system (I know people recommend pulling them off and doing pre-mix) to see if there is an issue that one or more lines to the low speed jets on the carbs are an issue.

    Thanks in advance.

Heat alarm, guessing solid alarm rite. If that's the case and motor is truly hot. I wouldn't recommend running at wot. When u changed impeller , did u look at ss impeller cup in housing ? Had yammy 70 hp at shop in April customer had replaced impeller and still getting alarm, what I found is stainless steel cup had spun in housing, driveshaft hole in cup is off set just a little and if cup spins just a little now u have an egg shaped hole in cup and loses water from impeller housing up next to driveshaft. And another thing, when lower unit is removed , pull thermostat and take water hose stick in where thermostat sets and back flush. Have someone to hold Gatorade bottle at water tube that comes down to lower unit and catch what ever comes out ( impeller pieces, sand or weeds). As far as oil I don't know, it doesn't get that cold here.

Oil won't solve your overheating issue.

I've always found Royal Purple to be overpriced for what it is, good stuff no doubt, but likely overkill for what 90% of people are doing. Any TCW3 rated oil should work just as well in that motor.

I would check the thermostat, and the rest of the cooling system, as mentioned.

That oil must gel in cold weather. Makes you wonder if all of them are susceptible to it. If you pre-mix I don't see it as being an issue, but it could be with oil injection.

I replaced the entire water pump sans the plastic and aluminum housing halves. The stainless cup that I removed was fine and not spun and the one I replaced it with I made sure to align with the locking tab that is present on it. The impeller I removed was intact and everything was working before, I just did the change as general maintenance.

Solid alarm, yes. And I had the issue before changing the water pump components. It comes and goes but only occurs when I have been idling for a while, like when looking at SI unit.

I will try to backflush the system to see if there is any crud in there. I am not 100% sure that I am actually getting hot though. Engine did not feel hot or smell hot.

Regarding the oil and cold. I used to have a bigger problem than I do now getting it to start and run when it is cold. I started using the mystik synthetic blend and it seemed to help but my engine is still what I would call pretty cold-natured. But once you get it started the first time it will start no problem the rest of the day. I can ride into a duck spot and hunt for 4-6 hours and it will still start right back up. Getting it to start that first time though is sometimes a chore.

I guess if I change oils it would be to the Star Brite oil. It is way better priced than the royal purple and no mention of cold issues. I didn't see where the royal purple was TCW3 certified either but I am sure it ticks all those boxes.

Thanks for the help. i will do some research on the thermostat. I am assuming they wear out like a car thermostat?

ETA - Thermostat and gasket was relatively cheap so went ahead and ordered both. Got to looking at the reviews and someone had posted that the thermostat fixed their overheating at idle, so fingers crossed whenever I get it changed out it will do the same for me.

Yes always replace thermostat with over heat issue or at least test

    Update time.

The thermostat and gasket was in the mailbox yesterday afternoon when I got home from work. Mowed the barn lot and had to stop when a storm rolled through. Took that time to change the thermostat.

Pulled the cover off and dang, no old thermostat! I have had this boat for maybe 8-9 years and not until this year have I ever had a problem with the overheat alarm and never had reason to check the thermostat housing.

I went ahead and cleaned the old gasket off and put the new thermostat in and closed it back up. Now my questions are; What differences will I notice? Will it not "pee" when it first starts up now? Will it have a stronger stream (it never was more than slightly more than a trickle at idle but steady at WOT)? Do I run the risk of more overheating problems with the thermostat versus no thermostat? How will this affect cold weather performance?

Also, this past Saturday I went ahead and pulled the head off after seeing several videos on youtube of yamahas with blogged water jacket passages. Mine was completely clean with not so much as a speck of sand or crud or deposits. I am really bumfuzzled by this overheating alarm now. Curious if the alarm or sensor itself is going bad.

Was your thermo. stat. on port or star side (because some are reversed) doesn't really matter , but thermostat is up top and there is a poppet valve low. That valve allows water to flow. Did u pull lower unit and back flush motor ?

Also make sure that when I have lower unit off. Make sure that water pick up in lower unit isn't halfway stopped up with sand, weeds.

one may surmise that at low rpm your pump isnt pushing water through the thing fast enough to keep it cool?
