Thermostat housing is above the exhaust plate on the port side. I do not think this model has a poppet valve. I searched a few different forums and one specifically said "this model does not have a poppet valve."

When I am at full throttle I have a strong stream of water from the tell-tale. I do not think it is stopped up at all.

New impeller installed and used the rebuild kit so it came with new everything save for the housing (new gaskets, plate, impeller housing, etc.). I do not think it is pump/impeller related as it did this overheat business before I changed the water pump components a little while back.

Makes me think I am running too lean with the oil again. It has the auto mix/inject system still. I visually inspected it and saw no issues apparent. I am going to run it tomorrow and see what shakes out.

Every now and again I just need to run the bejeezus out of it on the river or something and it behaves. Like you got to blow the cobwebs out of it at times.

Buddy of mine had same engine. Always overheated while idling for long period. Dealer rebuilt carbs and it stopped for a while. Then it came back. It’s the oil injection. At idle it gums up the carb, then it doesn’t get enough fuel to the cylinder. That’s part of the cooling on a two stroke.

Yes , weeds and sand can be culprit in any water passages.

The filter tube thing on the oil level sensor had come loose and was just floating around in the oil tank. Previous owner or shop must have done it. I'd never messed with the sensor. I drained the oil tank and fished it out of there and replaced it on the sensor plunger/float thing and got it back down into the hole that feeds the oil pump.

The oil lines go into the manifold behind the carbs. It mixes the oil right ahead of the reeds. Though I have seen it ooze oil down into the carbs, especially when it sits for a while and especially the bottom cylinder.

I guess my next step (after I run it again) is to replace the oil lines just to rule that out.

With new thermostat put in there the tell-tale whizzed as hard as ever.

Or get a block off plate and mix it yourself.

It has crossed my mind. I really don't think it will hurt to go ahead and mix oil in with the gas in the tank and use the oil inject as well. Worst case it over oils and smokes and gums the plugs. I can live with that.

It has also crossed my mind that the temp sensor on the head has gone bad. I want to say a new one is about $35 so not a hug hit to the bank account to rule that out too.

Replaced the temp sending unit that seats in the head. Ran it hard yesterday. Long runs at WOT on plane were no issue. First few times I idled around it alarmed. However, after running more and more it quit doing that and I could idle about and not have the alarm going off. It smoked really badly at very first, but I sprayed a good dose of aerosol sea foam in the cylinders when I had the head off.

I am at a loss as to what to try next if it becomes a bigger problem. New impeller and water pump installed, new high temp sensor/sending unit, good stream from the tell tale, filled with new synthetic oil (Star-Brite) and I only use non-ethanol gas.

I use to have an 2 stroke Evinrude and after $1300 overhaul ( Mechanic blamed it on the oil pump ) He said he would not warranty the engine overhaul unless I let him unhook pump and mix the oil. You might check with mechanic but I don't think I would do both, mix oil and leave pump operable. I know running too rich is hard on engine.
Thanks Mbsbeek thanked you for this post

Great thread. I am curious if you ever changed the stainless steel cup for the impeller. Is it possible that with the used cup that it just isn't drawing enough water to keep engine cool? Do you have a psi gauge to monitor the pressure of the water to make sure it falls in range with recommendation?

Yes, the rebuild kit came with a new cup that the impeller is housed within. No, I do not have a way to monitor the water pressure.

Visually the ports and passages are clear in the head. I had to take it off in order to replace the sending unit. I watched videos where people had tan scale and crud built up in those passages. Mine didn't look like that though they were stained tan.

I do have a strong stream from the tell tale, more steady when going wot as opposed to weaker when idling.
