    Default Trim Tab

Hey guys, I just bought a used BT pro 165. I haven't even had a chance to put it in the water yet but was checking it out this morning and noticed the trim (torque) tab is broke off. The only thing left is the base itself, that bolts under the cavitation plate. Is this a problem I need to fix ASAP, or can it wait til I can get a new one. BTW, 40 hp Merc ('02) with tilt/trim. Thanks for any help.

I would replace it...You can run the boat...you need to hold on to the steering wheel tight because it may pull hard to one side...Thats what the trim tab adjustment is for.
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

Part number should be 822157T2. You can do a google search and probably find it pretty easy. I use iboats.net most of the time but several others are good also.

Don't worry about it, it is out of the water when you are on plane and has no effect on steering.

It's importance is debatable, depending on several factors. But the statement that it's out of the water while on plane and has no affect on the steering is false. For it to be out of the water, it would require the engine to be mounted at an extremely high position with a low water pickup and a prop capable of running half out of the water.
    I'd rather be fishing.

Try it. I've seen a few rigs that it didn't make any difference at all without it. But then others it was just plain unsafe to run it.

If it's a tiller motor it will probably wear your arm out in about 3 minutes.

I'd run it first and see how it acts.

The tab on my old 60 Merc 2 stroke broke when I removed it to pull the lower unit. I never replaced it and didn't notice a difference with or without it. The 75hp Suzuki that I have now definitely needs it, pulls hard to the right without one.

Ok guys if anyone is interested, I got a chance to run the boat today. To be honest, it seems to have no ill affects with the broken tab, as far as steering. At least nothing I can't live with. Thanks for all your help.
