    Default Trailer hitch ball

So my 2” hitch ball has gotten rusty, no more chrome. Should I replace it or use it as is or lube it, and with what?

Just put some grease on it ... Same grease you use on your boat trailer wheel bearings will be fine
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

I did the same thing last fall and replaced mine with a fancy titanium lookin' ball from Tractor Supply and it looked terrible within 2 months of use. Save the $ and just grease yours up.

I keep my chrome trailer ball greased, and keep a black cover pulled over it. A tiny pin hole helps with taking the cover on and off.
The cover is mostly to keep the grease off my pants, as well as keeping the grease on the ball.
I could not find one of those covers ANYWHERE, and I mean I looked EVERYWHERE. I finally ordered one from Amazon, darn thing cost me about $8!
Out of town on a trip, we stopped by an "Ollies" store to pick up some snacks and just look around. At the checkout, the Wife looked down in my basket and noticed at least a half dozen of those trailer ball covers. "Do you really need all those?" She asked.
I answered "At 99 cents each, yep, I sure do".

Run it. A little rust won't hurt anything as long as it sees somewhat regular use.

You can grease it if you want, but then you have to fool with covers or risk getting it on your pants/truck interior.

I use wheel bearing grease and then take a tennis ball, cut a slit in it and slip it over the ball. Around here people even steal hitch covers but will not mess with a tennis ball.

Bought one of these a long time ago at Walmart https://www.walmart.com/ip/Curt-Manu...iABEgLUdfD_BwE and still have it on my hitch ball.

Unless your vehicle would use less than $5 in gas getting to & from a local Walmart ... buying a few online would be money well spent. IMHO

I keep the ball lubed up. When not in use I pull the receiver and put in a bucket in the back of my truck. I use a ball until it starts to pit real bad. I also put grease in the cup of my coupler of the trailer. It is the guilty culprit of this rust thing. Steel coupler on any ball will cause rust. Just the cost of doing business with water, trucks and trailers. Good luck.
