My older Evinrude 2 stroke (gas / oil mix) leaves a little residue from the exhaust while sitting at an idle, it's normal for my motor.
The last time I had my boat out I noticed that there was a pretty good gas/oil sheen on the water. It looked like it was coming from foot of the motor in the water. Is this normal, or is there something I need to check on?

What motor?
Could be gear oil from the lower unit, pull the plug and check it, if oil is getting out, water is probably getting in.
Could also be a leak in the fuel system, it will usually drip into the lower cowl and out of the drain holes near the leg. A lot of times if this is the case the motor will be cranky since it is breathing gas fumes and running rich. Pull the cowling and prime it up really hard and see if you can find any leaks.

I would leak check it like suggested above. The older motors do leave a little sheen if they are running a little rich. I have a 90's model Johnson 150hp that leaves a little if it sits and idles

Just get a new one, LOL - It is probably as they said just normal, do check the lower unit!

It ran fine, I just noticed it as I went back to let the bulge pump kick in. I actually noticed it when it was not running

Unburned gas and oil residue left in exhaust system. When you shut it down it will come out of prop and float on surface. Looks a lot worse than it really is.

May be a little trash in the carb(s). Run some Sea Foam thru it. It might help. I've had a couple JohnyRudes of the years and they did that a little.
