    Default Repowering

Sense 1999 I have been blessed with a great running easy starting Yamaha 25 hp outboard motor. But if you do the math you can see it is 20 yrs old and I am 20 years older also. Now it's time to get something with an electric start and lift assist and just a little more hp. I've been shopping the 4 strokes and have narrowed it down to 2 brands that fit my needs. Then while shopping on the internet I ran across a used 2017 Tohatsu 40 and want to make an offer on it but the NADA book doesn't give much help. Meaning their hi end price is more than the 2020 model and their low end price is only $400 cheaper than I could find for a 19 or 20 model and this just doesn't seem correct. Is there some guideline for buying "pricing" a used motor?

17 vs 19 just off seat of my pants I’d say 75% of new price. Then a little research on how does it look, how has it been used, is it a salt water run motor. Then you can kind of adjust price from there. If I couldn’t get any better than those numbers I’d just buy new and have the warranty.

Check for a local service shop in your area.

Cray I took your advice on the 75% of new price and $500 less. In the meantime they sent better photos of the of the motor and a note saying they new the owner and he bought the 40 from them new and traded it in to them for an upgrade. The only signs of use is small scratches in the paint on the lower unit and a small ding in the aluminum prop. When I spoke to them again they came back with a price of $150 over mine and I excepted. I am know the new owner of a 2017 40 hp Tohatsu. I'll pick it up Thursday. Yea!!!

Very nice rig, very similar to mine. I think I'll like it.
