Skegg Tip Broken
Some how I have managed to break off about 1 inch of my motor's skegg. Basically just the tip. This is on 150 Mercury Optimax. What should I do about this damage?

Like Cray said. If it is not performing any different than before, you really can just not do anything. Another way to repair it is to have it cut off clean, get a new skegg and have it cut and welded on. I did this on a 130 yamaha a few years back in Louisiana. Not as hard or as expensive as it sounds. Then buy merc. primer and paint in a spray can. Will be like new. Check out the company Parts Vu.

A good weld shop can weld a piece back onto what's left of the skeg. And then profile it back to shape

Have it welded.
By running it broken you run of the risk of damaging the prop. That's what the skeg is there for. The sharp edge may cause cavitation as well.
Any good aluminum welder can weld on a new piece pretty easily. The whole skeg has been busted off my 60 Merc at some point in the past, but has been repaired by welding on a new one.

Here is one on Ebay. Take it to welder , have him cut the bottom of yours smooth and straight, cut the new one to match up and weld and grind smooth. Then paint.

Skeg guard is easy to install and they will take one heck of a hit afterwards. I run one on all my motors weather they were broke or not.

While dock shooting I see a lot of boats. About 90% of the pontoons I see have a chunk missing out of the skeg. A generator, a small A/C tig set up with High Frequency box and a man would have hiself a mobile repair business that he could fish during his breaks
