    Default Lower unit oil

Guys, for the life of me I can not remember the lower unit oil weight on my 84 Evinrude 40hp.

80W-90 or straight 90 is fine. As long as it's marine grade, weight is not all that important.

I use the Walmart "Tech" brand Marine Gear Oil, it costs half as much so I change it twice as often!
I enjoy petting on my motor. Dad used to say "Take care of the motor, and it will take care of you".

We changed oil in everything on the farm at least once a year . Even tractors that saw limited use . " Oil is cheaper than metal " , my ole man would say .

On my farm we changed oil in the tractors before we started in the spring, when we finished breaking ground, after planting, before harvest. We changed the power units that ran 24-7 every Monday morning. We never had any engine problems, even with some with 25,000 hours on them. Oil IS cheap!!

Good Maintenance makes engines last. Power units hold up well because of their constsnt loads. I have a 1976 Hobart welding machine with 200 cubic inch inline 6 cylinder Ford engine. It runs like a top

Yep, changing lower unit oil is one of the cheapest and simplest maintenance jobs to do. Do it often and that way you can catch a problem before it gets too serious. And if you catch water in your oil, it's easy to rig up your own pressure tester and see where the leaking seal is.
