you need to do a valcum check also. you have 2 seals one is to keep water out and the other to keep oil in .

That's true. What do you use to vacuum test? I only pressure test because I was able to make a simple tester out of stuff laying around.

Yes with oil removed , pressure test. (Vent or fill, top and bottom plug) 8-12 psi if it holds 10- 15 mins. you are good. The only reason you would need to do this , is when you drain lower unit oil and notice milky mix.
