    Default 2 Motors Same Problem

My buddy has a Yamaha 2 stroke 50hp and my father in law had a Mariner 2 stroke 115. Both motors seemed to have the same problem but we are not sure what is causing it. Both motors will not fire up initially. But once you shoot some ether or gas into the air intake, the both fire up. Once they have initially been started and run for just a little while, they will fire up right away the rest of the day. It is just the initial start up that is having issues. We checked fuel filters and plugs and all the little things we could think of. I’m sure this is a fairly common problem and it probably discussed somewhere on this forum. Any ideas? Thanks!

Are you priming and choking them when first starting up?

My 55HP 2 Stroke Yamaha(actually a Mariner re-branded by Yamaha after the split) had a wax pellet choke system. Basically it provided a choked carb until the engine warmed and the wax softened and open the choke.(Not on of Japan's brightest moments).
If your motors have this system pushing the key in does nothing because it doesn't have a manual choke.
Anyway I had the same issues until I finally figured out the pellet thing. First, read the manuals carefully to see if theirs has this arrangement. If so, there is an adjustment on the carb or near it that lets you play with how much choke is provided, etc. I played around with mine until I finally got it to where it would start and stay running in cold weather.
As you stated with yours, once it cranked and warmed up it was a beast the rest of the day. I no longer have the boat but I loved that motor,
I think it's called Fuel Enrichment System. There is a lot of info if you Google that. Good luck.

Your engine issues may be different, but this is how mine operates.
My Mercury 115 2 Stroke 1992 model does not have a choke - it has an "Enrichener". On a COLD START, pump the bulb really hard to pressurize the system, turn the key to the "On" position, then push the key in to engage the "Enrichener" for a few seconds FIRST - then crank the motor and it fires off beautifully. 12 volt power to the motor must be on. The "Enrichener" has a manual button on top of it at the engine where you can open the cowl and manually activate it if you have to, or for troubleshooting. You can hear it click in. If it does not click, electrical trouble shooting will be in order.
If I try to engage mine at the same instant as I engage the starter, it has to turn over a bunch of times before it starts. If I key on - push it in a few seconds - then hit the starter, it fires off like a whompas kitty and is ready to roll with a wicked snarl. It is a different principle from a choke on my motor, but once understood, it works quite well. Not needed for warm starts, of course.

My motor was a 1999 year model. It didn't have the push key feature. It sure would have made things easier.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I am not aware of a choke on either motor. They may have the push key in kind of choke. Yes, the priming bulb is used before starting. I think y’all gave me a good info to help figure out what is going on. Thanks again!

I had a 2006 Yamaha 70hp two stroke got where I had to start it before I left home because it took me a while to start it when I got to the boat ramp. After the first start the rest of the day all you had to do was just touch it and it fired up. Well I went to up grade to a 4 stroke and was told it had a bad cylinder, so I up graded to a whole new 2018 boat and Yamaha 90hp 4 stroke.

The Yamaha has an auto fuel enrichment system. If you will pull the cowling and look at the front of the motor, to the right side on the black plastic cover should be a diagram stating to what position the red lever is to be placed for "off", "auto" and "on". The lever is behind the cover, right behind the diagram and part of the center carb. You want it in the "auto" position. Cold start for that motor is NO throttle applied. Prime bulb and start. Allow to warm for a moment before applying throttle. (It is possible that the lever is turned off, there's an issue with the priming system or the operator is applying throttle at cold start.)

The Mariner has a different design fuel enrichment system and requires the throttle only lever to be raised or the button to be pushed in at the pivot point of the throttle hammer and the throttle pushed forward, depending on what control box you have. Turn key to the on position and push in as you apply starter activation. When the motor starts, release key and allow motor to high idle at or below 2k rpm. If the engine sounds as though it's about to smoother out, briefly push in on the key and release.

Both engines should be 'warm' in about 30-40 seconds. Be sure to bring the Mariner back to an idle before shifting into forward or reverse. (High idle shifts are very destructive to the lower unit.)
    I'd rather be fishing.
