    Default New Motor???

I am running a 12 YO Merc 150 Optimax on a 19 Triton Fish & Ski...(about 3500#)....almost 600 hours....one bad piston....other problems happening more often...thinking about replacing with a 4 stroke....a mechanic told me that the new 115 Merc 4 stroke would out perform the motor I now have....I have always heard that the 4 stroke is slow on the hole shot but otherwise is OK...how do you think the 115 would perform....I only do crappie & bass fishing....not necessarily looking for speed or power, just dependability.....might cost around $9500....

I find it very hard to believe that a 115 4 stroke is going to outperform a 150 2 stroke.

If I was going to buy a new one it would be a Yamaha or Etec.

I would look at a Yamaha or Tohatsu. Pretty sure that Merc power head is Tohatsu with Merc electronics and add on’s. New 4 strokes with power curves, lighter weight and added torque perform just as well as or better than older 2 strokes. I’m like a Atimm, don’t believe a 115 would perform on top end as well as a 150. That being said, with right prop don’t think you would be unhappy with how it performed on your boat. Do your research for sure. That’s a lot of money to end up not satisfied. In long run cost of repair on motor that may have future problems at least half cost of new motor.

Not really the same but I replaced an older 40hp Merc 2 stroke with a 2017 Merc 60 4 stroke. It was the best thing I ever did.
I thought about going to Yamaha but one thing to consider is you will also have to change your controls and possibly some wiring if you change manufactures. Going from an older Merc to a newer Merc they make a pig tail to make the wiring connections. I don't think it's that easy if you change brands (but I could be wrong) I'd check it out before making that switch.
Best price I found on new Merc's was BPS
    Good luck

I am with the rest of them. I don't know about a 115 hp 4 stroke running like a 150 hp 2 stroke

It might not have quite the power or speed...But the first few times you stop to fish and realize the motor still idling because it's so quiet......You'll know you made the right choice.

I can't either and that's the problem....just can't wrap my head around that....I completely trust my mechanic (who advised me).....said he would take it back if I did not like it....his background is with racing the big boats....said the power comes from the torque in the newer lower units...just got to get the right prop on.....going to a 150 will be another $2500....I just may do that for peace of mind....
