    Default Starting my old Evinrude

I plan to see if my 1984 Evinrude 40 will run. Really low hours on this motor. It has been sitting for 20 years since last using it. I think I will just check the plugs, oil the cylinders, and the turn the key. Anything else you recommend that I do?

The water pump will probably not work. The impeller will have taken a set from being in the same place fo so long, if not dry rotted.

Otherwise I wouldn't do much else.

pour a little oil in each cylinder, and while plugs are out turn the flywheel a few times to make sure the ring has a little lube on them other than that, hookup the fuel tank and see if the bulb will get tight to let you know if any fuel leaks are present, see if it fires if it runs let it run just a very short time shut it down and check it over,if all looks good then fire it up and let it run....good luck oops you said to do the oil in cylinders thing sorry, but still do it....

I bought an old evinrude that sat in a barn for 20 yrs after the previous owner passed. the coil packs on the older motors are not sealed. they have some sort of packing on them that keeps moisture out but not sealed like todays. These dry out and break. Might want to check them, also fuel lines for Hardening and cracking. When mine was in the shop we cleaned carbs, replaced fuel filter, replaced fuel lines, replaced the coil packs, and also replaced the spark plug wires. Due to the older oil mixture of 24:1 it smokes a bit on start-up but runs like a champ. Hope this helps, and good luck on keeping your motor running.

To each his own, i have a 6 hp Evinrude Fisherman that i bought new in 1973.
It sat for at least 10 years till about 3 years ago when i decided to get it running again.
I didn’t even bother trying, just took it to my mechanic and told him to do what was needed.
What was needed amounted to over $300, but it purrs like the day it was new.

Yep I agree with Attimm693, Impeller would have taken set and hardened too so it will most probably need replacing.

I plan to replace the impeller, fuel lines, bilge pump, and everything. But nothing before I see if it has seized or not. No point throwing money at a dead body.

Should be able to take off the cowling and roll it over by hand to see if it is seized.
