    Speedometer may be good guess... I didn't see it labeled in the manual, but I see it in all the images in the manual. It is part of the housing, not a crack from the piece of wood we hit.

    I was guessing because I do know that SOME motors have the pick up for the speedometer built into the motor instead of having the pitot tube on them

    A little searching shows the Yamaha water pick-up in the leading edge of the lower unit and the connection for the gauge above that. I have very little experience with Yamaha so was curious.
