Default Converting tiller steer to remote steer

I got a new to me 89 model Johnson 20 HP motor for a small water boat I'm working on. The boat had a 30 HP Evinrude on it that was remote steer. This Johnson has had the tiller handle removed and had been used as a remote steer boat at some time in it's history. I just don't exactly understand how they pulled that off...

The steering cable typically runs through the tilt tube on the motor base. The Johnson doesn't have a tilt tube, it just has a long 3/8" diameter bolt that it tilts on. So... there is no place on the motor to run the steering cable through. There also doesn't seem to be enough "meat" on the base for me to drill it out and install a tilt tube, or at least not the tilt tube that is in the old Evinrude.

Do they make a small diameter tilt tube, or is there some other modification I can make to attach the steering cable? I could easily build a bracket to attach the steering cable, but I couldn't get it close enough to the pivot point of the motor that it would rotate like it needs to to raise and lower the motor for trailering.

    Any help appreciated.

I had a 1980 20hp Mercury that had the tiller handle removed to put on the boat that was a stick stear. The whole setup was homemade and ran off of a cable steer setup that was ran through pulleys in the back and just attached to the front handle of the motor to make it turn. Is it possible the motor was setup that way before you got it? I sold the boat and unfortunately don't have any pictures of the setup.

There were two types of transom brackets used on those motors. And as luck would have it, you have one of each. There is a product on the market for attaching your steering cable. But since both of your engines use the same physical block, why not just swap powerheads? If you will use the carb and intake from the 30, you will still have 30hp when your done.
    I'd rather be fishing.

This is the product you would need to connect that style bracket. It is mounted to the transom, where the thumb clamps of your motor will hold it in place.

Horsepower restrictions for one of the places I want to fish with the boat...

After I went to bed last night I thought that I should have put that info in my original thread, because that is the simple solution, but in this case I can't do it.

Thanks for the info! I went to the link and still couldn't wrap my head around how it would allow the motor to tilt up for hauling. I went to their website and looked more and finally saw what allows it to pivot. Thanks for posting it. I can make a bracket to hold the pivot tube from my old motor, then I'll just have to make a new connector arm that has more height to make up for the pivot tube being lowered.

    Awesome, thanks again!

Im Trying to do the same thing as you,my out board does not have any place to mount a tilt tube saw a youtube where a person mounted
a tilt tube with stand off on each side of the tilt tube,He made two brackets from some flat plate. one end of the bracket he put a 1-inch hole and the other end a hole that was the size of the tilt bolt and mounted it under the engine.it set just in front of where the tilt-tube would be on an outboard that had one on it.It looked like it worked perfect.Im going to try that on my outboard motor..If that dont work Ill try to mount a hub under my console and use the older two cable steering, type in adding a tilt tube to an out board and see if its on youtube...
