    Default Yamaha help

I am having trouble with the trim and tilt on my 175 hpdi. When you tilt up or down you have to keep moving the switch until it works. Oil is okay and just put in a new battery. Anybody got any ideas on what is causing this.

I'll second G on the possible bad switch. Also try pulling the switch, if you can, checking the connections in the back for corrosion and spraying some contact cleaner under the rocker and on the connections. I use CRC or DeOxit.

Don do you have a switch on the motor or just the one on the shift handle?

Does it do it with different switches? If it does it with more than one switch is probably the relay sticking. Yamaha use a relay with a sliding bar for up and down and they are bad about coming bad and doing that.

Sounds like your relays are going bad or you have a problem in the switch contacts. I'd work on the switches 1st, if the motor does go up/down with jiggling the switch button(s). If it is the relays, replace them all ... and you should be able to do that, yourself.

My 90HP Merc T/T started having problems with not always working and I ignored it until one day it would trim UP but not down ... replaced both relays & problem solved.

Don’t know for sure with year and serial number but this is what your relay should look like. Most big late models are the same. Some are mounted right in front, lower section of motor and some are mounted on the side.
