Default 2006 Yamaha 50 2 stroke overheating light!

So I pulled out my g3 to check it out and make sure its ready for the weekend since this will be my first time out with it. Hooked up the muffs and cranked it up to let idle for a little. After about 4 or 5 minutes the engine overheat light came on but the tell tale had steady water coming out of it. Any ideas?

yes. replace the water pump. When you're running on muffs the hose pressure can push water through causing you to have a pee stream, but that doesn't mean you have enough water going to the motor. Also check for a stuck Thermostat if it has one. Just a couple of thoughts to work with. Good Luck with it

Ok. Is that just the impeller or is there more to it than that?

Yes, to start change impeller, then check thermostat. You can remove it and put in a pan of water and heat on stove to check and make sure it’s opening. Plus on thing I have found recently putting pumps in Yamaha motors, they perform better by running in a cut off drum of water than on muffs. Especially right after replacing pump.

Get # 22 water pump kit. It’s only 3 dollars more than impeller and has everything you need if you mess up something.

Well I got my parts in. Thanks for the boats.net link. Very helpful people and quick delivery. Went to put in the thermostat only to find out that it didn't have one in it....,,,well it has one now. Guess I will try and get the waterpump in tomorrow afternoon.

Word of warning, when you go to drop lower unit you really need 2 people unless really strong. You have to break it loose then move it down a inch or so. Right in the front inside the housing is a rubber tube that fits on a hose barb and should have one if not 2 wire ties. You will have to cut those then using a small flat blade screwdriver push that tube up off barb. Be very careful to not break that barb off. Then you have to reverse that going back together. That is your speedo hose.
If by your self one way to accomplish this is crank trailer tongue down where with motor trimmed level you can place a floor jack under skag to kinda hold it in place until you get hose off and back on.
