Back when I was working on motors I used CDI Electronics. Good prices and good product. Many times better than OEM. And yes you should replace them in pairs to be sure you are using the same revision level.
I got a 88 merc 115 that is needing switch box. I have read that I need to replace in pairs. Is that correct and if so does anyone know good brand and supplier ( trying to save some cash but don't want to do this again in 6 months).
thanks

If you will post the serial number for your motor, I can give you the part number for a Sierra switchbox that I use in my shop all the time. CDI makes good parts as well. I am also a CDI dealer but the ones I have had the best luck with are built by a German company called Prufrex. Mercury changed from an inline 6 cylinder to an inline 4 cylinder in
1987 or 1988. That's why I need the sn# to give you the correct one. The 6 has 2 switchboxes and the 4 only has one.
I don't have serial # in front of me but it is an inline 6. I think the CDI # is 114-7778. If you still need serial # I will post later.
The Sierra pn is 18-5775. They cost a little more but they are worth it. You should replace both, if you don't know how to test the bias circuit. If the bias circuit is bad, the one that is good now will go out soon. Then after you replace it, soon the first one you replaced will fail. It will be an expensive merry go round.
CDI and Sierra both make good products. I have had better luck with the Sierra when it comes to the 3,4 & 6 cylinder Mercs.
