    Default Battery acid

At what level do you add more acid to a battery? Mine still have the cells covered, but there is a pretty good space between the acid and being totally full. Also, is it best to take the caps off while charging?

Add Distilled water...Check and add often because the water is sacrificial...It keeps the acid from evaporating...once the water has gone then you lose acid to evaporation and that weakens the battery. Fill to the bottom of the tube or fill ring. Do not over fill.

So you don’t add acid and you just add the water?

Hello: I remember when you bought a battery, it came with a box of acid and you filled the battery yourself . Such fun! Once you filled it with acid and it was ready to go and you were using it you always topped it off with distilled water, never acid. Good Luck. O - R

I'll just add a little to what "G" has said :

Use distilled water & fill to just below the bottom of the fill tube ... correct !! BUT, charge the battery up to full charge & THEN add the distilled water. And if the lead plates ever become exposed, put enough distilled water in to cover the plates and then charge the battery to full charge ... then finish filling up to the bottom of the fill tube. You really don't want the fluid level to actually get INTO the fill tube itself, as the acid may bubble up out of the tube and onto the battery top. Charging will cause the fluid to expand a little, which is why it's not recommended to fill the fluid level up into the tubes (and probably another good reason to charge the battery prior to adding any fluids).

As to removing the caps when charging .... they're vented, so that's not really necessary. Just be sure the batteries are in a well ventilated space, so the gases created when charging can be vented away and not collect in an enclosed space. Those gases are flammable, and can explode if a spark is created nearby. (it's hydrogen gas)

That's one reason why I prop my rear hatch door open when charging my batteries overnight in a boat slip. And if I was using a regular charger (rather than the onboard charger I have), I'd disconnect the extension cord plug from the electric outlet first, then remove the alligator clips from the battery terminals ... so as to stop any potential sparking between the clips and terminal.

yes...just add distilled water The acid is heavier and the water being lighter stays on top......thats why you need to check your batterys often because once all the water evaporates...then the acid will start too and if you lose too much acid...your battery will be weaker and have a shortened life span.
